Over het historische pand
Hellevoetsluis bloeide in het verleden als belangrijke marinehaven. Rond deze haven ontstond een levendige gemeenschap, waarin handel en ambacht floreerden. In deze bedrijvige omgeving opende Sigarenmagazijn De Tijdgeest in de vroege 20e eeuw zijn deuren. Een sigarenmagazijn is een speciaalzaak waar sigaren, tabak en vaak ook aanverwante producten worden verkocht. In het verleden waren sigarenmagazijnen ook sociale ontmoetingsplekken, waar liefhebbers samenkwamen om kennis uit te wisselen en te genieten van elkaars gezelschap en precies dat is vandaag nog terug te vinden in café de Tijdgeest.

About the Historic Building
Hellevoetsluis once flourished as an important naval harbor. Around this bustling hub, a vibrant community grew, where trade and craftsmanship thrived. It was in this lively setting that Sigarenmagazijn De Tijdgeest opened its doors in the early 20th century.
A ‘sigarenmagazijn’, or cigar shop, was a specialty store selling cigars, tobacco, and related products. In the past, these shops also served as social meeting places where enthusiasts gathered to share knowledge and enjoy each other’s company—a tradition that lives on today in Café De Tijdgeest.

Over de plek van het terras
Het terras voor de deur staat bekend als “het Baantje,” maar waar komt die naam eigenlijk vandaan? Er zijn verschillende verhalen, en één ervan gaat terug naar de tijd dat de Rijkswerf in Hellevoetsluis volop in bedrijf was. Wachtposten liepen daar hun ronde, van het wachtschip over de brug naar de woning van de directeur van de Marinewerf en weer terug. Dat noemde men een “baantje wachtlopen.” Zo kreeg deze plek zijn bijnaam, die tot op de dag van vandaag is blijven hangen.
About the Location of the Terrace
The terrace out front is known as “het Baantje,” but where does that name come from? There are several stories, and one of them traces back to the time when the Rijkswerf in Hellevoetsluis was bustling with activity. Guards patrolled their rounds, walking from the guard ship over the bridge to the residence of the Naval Yard director and back again. This routine was referred to as a “baantje wachtlopen” (a guard’s patrol). That’s how this spot earned its nickname, which has stuck to this day.
